Since I’ve been quite a hermit staying indoors immersed in my own world, my brother, Helmi, has picked up the habit of surprising me with visitors. Don’t get me wrong. I actually like it because I’ve not seen these people in years and they give me a good short break from my reality. Recently, he brought Marlena over. I knew her from him. Well my brother and I share a lot of friends.
Marlena as we knew her before was a girl on the rugged side with a butchy edge. The Marlena that arrived at my doorstep was what the airlines company had done to her. She looks more polished than I have ever been. But there’s a quiet maturity about Marlena now and I like that. She spent a year travelling the world after she stopped flying. She is a woman with a plan and a lot of options. I really like that. I really love the transformation. Not necessarily the polished up sitting daintily like a princess part but more of the mindset she has developed.
And then just 3 days ago, he brought Nazirul over. Apparently, by the looks of it, these 2 has spent some time in touch with each other while I’ve not seen her for at least 5 years? Nazirul was my junior in secondary school and we were very close. So close in fact, she was spending half her time at my place annoying me with her banters with my brother. There are some people in life you don’t see for many years and when they’re suddenly back in the picture, it was as if no time was lost at all in between. There was Nazirul again, giving me a massage while they tease and cuss at each other over my head.
2 days later she was over at my place again cooking chicken rice for me. How wonderful is that. But because she took a generation to get to my place, I was late for Jay’s birthday surprise!
We were supposed to meet at SMU. Jay goes on this ritual Friday cycle with her husband and a convoy of fixie riders. So the plan was for Acit to bring her to SMU. But because Iman and I were not in time for the surprise, the girls shouted ‘Happy Birthday!’ to us when we finally found them. Gosh, we felt so bad. I’m sorry Jay. I wasn’t complacent that SMU was nearby but the chicken did take a long time to cook. Hee. But I hoped it was a good surprise and you enjoyed your birthday ride
